Coastal Landform Constrains Dispersal in Mangroves

چکیده

Mangrove forests are dynamic ecosystems found along low-lying coastal plains tropical, subtropical, and some warm-temperate coasts, predominantly on tidal flats fringing deltas, estuaries, bays, oceanic atolls. These landforms present varied hydrodynamic geomorphological settings for mangroves to persist could influence the extent of within-site propagule transport subsequent local regeneration. In this study, we examined how different landform characteristics may genetic diversity, kinship, neighborhood structure mangrove populations. To do so, considered independent populations Avicennia marina , one most abundant widespread species, located in estuarine bay environments spread across Western Indian Ocean region. A transect approach was estimate kinship-based fine-scale spatial using 15 polymorphic microsatellite markers 475 adult A. trees from 14 Elevated kinship values significant up 30, 60, or 90 m distances were detected sheltered systems void river discharge, suggesting a setting suitable very retention establishment within neighborhood. Slopes linear regression over restricted distance 150 significantly declining each transect. Contrastingly, such has not been transects bordering rivers considered, alongside partially creeks, that recruitment here is governed by unrelated carried-away mixed-origin propagules. South African showed strong inbreeding levels. general, have shown can locally experience modes movement, explained their position landforms. Thus, resilience through natural regeneration achieved responses characterized conditions, which be important information management protection variety environments.

Mangroves as indicators of coastal change

In view of the unique biological characteristics of mangroves, it is interesting to assess the extent to which these ecosystems can be used as indicators of coastal change or sea-level rise. From recent studies of mangrove mortality at several locations (including Guiana, Gambia, Côte d'Ivoire, Kenya, India and Bangladesh), it appears that these coastal ecosystems are so specialized that any mi...

Mapping structural characteristics of the coastal and island forms of mangroves in the Hara Biosphere Reserve

Given the importance of availability sufficient and accurate information on the structural characteristics of mangroves to develop conservation and restoration programs for these ecosystems, this study investigates and maps the structural characteristics of the coastal and island forms of the mangroves in the Hara Biosphere Reserve. To this end, through a field inventory (32 sample plots with t...

Behavior Constrains the Dispersal of Long-Lived Spiny Lobster Larvae

Behavior such as ontogenetic vertical migration (OVM) limits the transport of marine larvae with short pelagic larval durations (PLDs), but its effect on the supposed long-distance dispersal of larvae with long PLDs is unknown. We conducted laboratory tests of ontogenetic change in larval ph ototaxis and examin ed size-specific patterns of larval distribution in the plankton to characterize OVM...

Correction: Interaction between Water and Wind as a Driver of Passive Dispersal in Mangroves

Although knowledge on dispersal patterns is essential for predicting long-term population dynamics, critical information on the modalities of passive dispersal and potential interactions between vectors is often missing. Here, we use mangrove propagules with a wide variety of morphologies to investigate the interaction between water and wind as a driver of passive dispersal. We imposed 16 combi...
